Digitale Kinoarchive - Herausforderungen und Lösungsansätze

Article by Arne Nowak and Siegfried Fößel, Fraunhofer-Institute for Integrated Circuits, Erlangen, Germany, that appears in the March 2008 issue of German magazine FKT - Fernseh- und Kinotechnik.

Abstract:

The continuing digitalization of production and distribution of motion pictures imposes a problem also on archives. Preservation of conventional film material is a well-known process where standards and methods have been successfully used for decades. However, this is currently not the case with digitally produced material. File formats and media types are too variable and often proprietary systems are used that are, looking from an archive’s point of view, not very long-lasting and make copying and re-encoding to new formats and media necessary. This is laborious and often accompanied by loss of quality.

In the following article we describe requirements for digital motion picture archival and derived system specifications for data formats and workflows. We introduce a system concept which has been developed in the European project EDCine and describe its application. Furthermore we present activities in international standardization in this area.
